Heat Pump Rebates: Three Tiers Based on Your Setup
Mass Save structures heat pump rebates in three tiers based on how much of your home the new system will serve. All rebates are paid per ton of installed equipment capacity.
The three rebate tiers are:
- Whole-home rebate – up to $8,500 – At $2,650 per ton, this is the highest available rebate and applies when a heat pump fully replaces an existing fossil-fuel or electric-resistance system. Oil, propane, natural gas, and electric resistance systems all qualify. The old system must be removed or disconnected at the time of installation.
- Partial-home rebate – up to $8,500 – At $1,125 per ton, this tier applies to hybrid or dual-fuel setups in which the heat pump supplements an existing boiler or furnace. The existing system remains in place as a backup, and integrated controls are required in zones where it remains active. Partial-home customers sizing their heat pump to meet the full home heating load qualify for an additional $500 sizing bonus on top of the base rebate.
- Basic rebate – up to $2,500 – At $250 per ton, this rebate applies to projects that replace an existing heat pump or add heat to a previously unconditioned space, such as a garage or addition.
Our team reviews your existing system and home layout before recommending a rebate tier, so you enter the project with a clear picture of the final cost.
Heat Pump Water Heater: $750 Instant Rebate at Purchase
If your home still uses a standard electric, propane, natural gas, or oil water heater, replacing it with a heat pump water heater qualifies for a $750 instant rebate, applied at the time of purchase through a participating distributor. There is no rebate form to file. Our licensed plumbers pass the rebate directly when ordering the unit.
Heat pump water heaters use three to four times less energy than standard electric models, leading to significant annual savings on your utility bills. For a one- to four-unit residential property, the $750 rebate reduces the upfront cost of the upgrade, bringing it closer to that of a standard unit.
Equipment must be ENERGY STAR® certified and installed in 2026.
0% Financing Through the Mass Save HEAT Loan
Qualifying upgrades do not need to be paid for all at once. The Mass Save® HEAT Loan offers up to $25,000 at 0% interest through participating lenders, covering the cost of heat pumps, heat pump water heaters, and related energy efficiency improvements. Loan terms range from three to seven years, depending on household income.
Preapproval and a completed Authorization Form are necessary before starting any work. Our team guides you through that process to help your project begin on time.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
How Do I Know Which Rebate Tier I Qualify For?
Your rebate tier depends on whether the new heat pump will fully replace your existing system, supplement it, or simply update an existing heat pump. Our team reviews your current setup during the consultation and confirms which tier applies before any work begins.
-
Does My Existing System Have to Be Removed to Qualify for the Whole-Home Rebate?
Yes. The whole-home rebate of $2,650 per ton requires the existing fossil-fuel or electric-resistance system to be removed or permanently disconnected. If keeping the old system as a backup is important to you, the partial-home rebate at $1,125 per ton is the better fit.
-
Are R-410A Systems Still Eligible for Mass Save Rebates?
No. Systems using R-410A refrigerant became ineligible on January 1, 2026. Equipment must use R-32 or R-454B refrigerant to qualify. All systems we install meet the current refrigerant requirements.
-
How Does the HEAT Loan Work Alongside Rebates?
The HEAT Loan and Mass Save rebates are separate programs, and you apply them in sequence. The rebate reduces the total project cost, and the HEAT Loan finances what remains at 0% interest. Preapproval must be completed before work begins. Our team coordinates both, so neither one slows down your project timeline.
-
Does the $750 Water Heater Rebate Require Me to File Anything? No. The instant rebate is applied through the distributor at the point of purchase. Our licensed plumbers handle that process when they order the unit. You receive the savings without having to file a separate rebate form.
